Cowboy Hat Etiquette

The rules for appropriate wearing of a western hat have evolved over many generations. The etiquette for men wearing cowboy hats is rooted in respect, tradition, and practicality. There are regional differences in some specific rules, so observing others is a great way to identify what is appropriate for your specific region of the country. Having said that, here are the general guidelines that are accepted in most regions:
When to Remove Your Hat
1. Indoors:
· Always remove your hat when entering someone’s home, a restaurant, church, or other indoor spaces (except certain arenas or barns where hats are part of the culture).
· When you enter a restaurant, especially formal restaurants hats should be removed. In informal dining establishments, especially if there isn’t a safe location to place your hat it is generally to keep your hat on while eating.
· It’s generally acceptable to keep your hat on in informal settings like a rodeo or a western-themed bar.
2. During the National Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance:
· Remove your hat, hold it in your hand over your heart, and stand respectfully.
3. At the Dinner Table:
· Hats should be removed while eating, whether indoors or outdoors, subject to the exceptions identified above.
· While the above is the generally accepted rule, in SW Colorado where I live, it is common to see cowboy hats being worn during dinner even at relatively formal eating establishments. This may in part be due to the lack of an appropriate place for wearers to safely place their hats once they are removed.
4. During Prayer or Religious Ceremonies:
· Take your hat off as a sign of respect.
5. When Greeting a Lady or Elder:
· Tipping your hat (slightly lifting it) is a courteous gesture.
· Fully removing it when greeting someone formally is a respectful gesture.
6. Funerals or Memorials:
· Always remove your hat during a service or when passing by a gravesite.
Handling Your Hat
· Never place your hat on a bed; it’s considered bad luck in cowboy superstition.
· Set your hat crown down (brim up) when placing it on a table or surface to protect the brim’s shape and keep it clean.
Wearing It Correctly
· Ensure the front of the hat faces forward (most hats have a bow or tag inside to mark the back). You'd be surprised how many people I see wearing their hat backwards!
· Tilt your hat slightly forward for a classic, confident look.
Context-Specific Rules
In western culture, your hat can be a practical tool to shield you from the sun or cold, but it also carries symbolic weight. Wearing it respectfully aligns with the heritage it represents.
I’d love to hear from you. What are some of the rules for wearing a western hat are common in your area? Are there important exceptions to the rule I have outlined above that you are aware of?
